There is nothing that brings people together more than sport. This is what UFS-Kovsies’ Khomotso Mamburu loves about Varsity Netball. Having people rooting for their team, even when they are trailing.
Kovsies have already lost their first match of the new Varsity Netball season to UP Tuks on Monday and even though the Free State team will have to wait until the sixth round of the competition to host a home game at the Callie Human Hall, Mamburu still loves the atmosphere and attention that comes with a home game.
“I’m super excited, it’s the highlight of the year,” she said. “I like the fact that it includes the whole university. People ask about it; people know about it. I also love that it goes to different varsities, it’s amazing. You see the spirit of the whole varsity coming together to support the teams on court.”
Mamburu said she is hopeful Kovsies will walk away with the trophy this year and dethrone current champions, NWU-Pukke. Burta de Kock’s side will likely pick themselves up when they face VUT in the second round of the matches. The Free State side can easily use the match to get their confidence back for the season.
Mamburu said she hopes the new upcoming players will contribute to a successful season.
“Trying to win the trophy is another thing. Some of our players had to move on, that’s part of life. We now have youngsters in the starting seven who are ready to prove their worth. That’s new energy that’s vibrant, new passion and wanting to prove themselves. We have nothing to lose, that why we are going to go all in and I think we are going to make it,” she said.
