It was always going to be tough for UCT when they faced the twice-past-champions Kovsies at the Coetzenburg Indoor Centre on Sunday and the final result of 62-23 confirmed this.
The average score in this encounter had been 83-16 for the girls from Bloemfontein and the Kovsies had the SA U/21 triumvirate of Lefébre Rademan, Khanyisa Chawane and vice-captain Khomotso Mamburu in their ranks. These three all showed why they had been selected for national duty and stamped their authority on the match.
The Kovsies opened an early lead at 5-2 and kept the scoreboard ticking over regularly. The lead extended to 9-4 and 14-5, before UCT grabbed a goal to end the quarter at 14-6.
It seemed for every goal UCT managed to score the Kovsies responded in two or three goal bursts and the Bloemfonteiners went out to a 23-9 lead. UCT managed to slow the tempo down and the teams went into the break at 26-11.
After play had resumed Kovsies called the power play with the scoreline at 31-13 and as soon as it had ended UCT did the same. The frantic period of play ended with Kovsies leading 41-17 and hunting for the vital bonus-point.
The Kovsies would have to wait a little longer before they did the business as the third quarter ended at 46-18. Another quick goal-scoring burst up the 50 goal mark and from then it was all Kovsies firing on all cylinders.
The UCT girls did make a little bit of history and scored the most goals against the Kovsies yet, surpassing the 19 goals scored last year. Their wing defence, Robyn Adams, also walked away with the title of FNB Player of the Match.
Kovsies will be confident heading into their next match on Monday, when they face the Madibaz at 17:30. UCT face the mammoth task of tackling hosts Maties and they will have to regroup quickly before their 19:00 clash at the Coetzenburg Indoor centre. Both these matches are live on SuperSport.
