A Cape semi-final derby of epic proportions saw UWC easily defeat UCT 3-1 for a place in Thursday’s Varsity Women’s Football final against TUT.
This will be a repeat of last year’s Varsity Women’s Football final.
UWC were also going at it hammer and tongs and were constantly in UCT’s penalty area. UCT’s Shalom Chitanda was a rock in defence and halted UWC as much as she could. UWC eventually found the opener after UCT could not clear a corner. The ball fell to Thalea Smidt who buried the ball into the corner of the net. Advantage UWC.
The rest of the half was a closely fought affair, as both teams looked to stamp their authority on the match. UCT is seemed were desperate not to concede another goal before the half time break and parked the bus in defence.
UWC went into the break with a 1-0 lead and seemed to have the greater desire to grab a second goal.
It took only one quick counter attack from UWC to extend their lead as Miche Oosthuizen’s long run and square ball set up Abongile Dlani with an easy finish.
This put UWC in an even more commanding position as they closed off the match. The cherry on the cake was Smidt’s second goal for UWC from a free kick nearly 35 metres out. It was a brilliant curling free kick that smashed into the top corner of the net.
UCT got a consolation goal as Katherine Atkinson grabbed her side’s solitary strike after stoppage time. UWC now sharpen their energy and focus for the final against TUT at the TUT Stadium on Wednesday, 22 September. A cracker awaits football fans.
