The Madibaz kept their remarkable season on track as they collected a crucial bonus-point in their 75-27 victory of basement side VUT.
Madibaz had started their campaign well and were looking for their third victory while VUT would wanted to record a first win for the season. The side from the Vaal had showed glimpses of potential but there is little room to develop in Varsity Netball and no quarter is given out on the court.
The first quarter started with the exchanges but then the Madibaz took control to surge to a lead of 10-4. The score became 13-4, which became 18-5 at the end of the first quarter. Riana Buys, the Madibaz Goal Shooter, was quite impressive and kept the scorers busy as she slotted goal after goal.
When Buys went off with the score at 24-6 it would remain to be seen if her replacement would maintain the high level of accuracy.
The power play was called with the Madibaz leading 29-7 and they scored four times to lead 37-12 with halftime looming. VUT managed another goal before the break but at 37-13 they were staring down the barrel.
Sibubele Mandeka and Bianca Blom kept the Madibaz scoreboard ticking over and they scored seven goals before VUT managed to respond with one of their own. Trailing by 30 goals with nearly 25 minutes left in the match meant VUT had to do some damage control or risk being completely overwhelmed.
The bonus point was wrapped up in the third quarter with the score at 50-14 and the Madibaz were looking to fire on all cylinders ahead of the crunch match against the Kovsies. They scored nine goals in just four minutes to end the third quarter ahead at 59-16.
The reintroduction of Buys saw the Madibaz continue to pile on the points and they then went past the 70-point mark. VUT drew a few cheers with their never surrender attitude and added a few goals to their total. At 70-22 the power play was yet to be called and one had the feeling that VUT was not keen on giving the Madibaz the opportunity to double their scoring chances.
The final power play saw the Madibaz rub the proverbial salt in the Madibaz wounds and final score of 75-27 saw the Port Elizabeth based team walk away in a positive place ahead of their match against the Kovsies. VUT have the unenviable task of facing the Pukke juggernaut and one fears the result will be more of the same.
