Varsity Sports have announced that Varsity Cricket will move from January to September, in 2019.
The tournament has been moved to the latter part of 2019 due to a number of reasons, one of them being the qualification tournament’s fixtures. The USSA (University Sports South Africa) cricket tournament will take place during the first week of December 2018, in Stellenbosch.
“The time between the qualification and Varsity Cricket is too tight to ensure that a high-quality Varsity Cricket tournament will be delivered,” said Varsity Cricket Manager, Jana Arlow. “The bonus is that September is also the start of the South African cricket season,” Arlow concluded.
Riaan Osman, Chairperson of USSA Cricket, welcomed the change in date.
The top eight teams from this year’s USSA tournament will qualify and participate in Varsity Cricket next year. Varsity Cricket has been dominated by Tuks in previous years and the university has also contributed to the development of current Protea players Aiden Markham and Lungi Ngidi. Both players represented Tuks at the inaugural Varsity Cricket tournament in 2015.
Varsity Cricket is set to take place from 2 to 7 September 2019 in Potchefstroom and fixtures will be released in the new year.
