Wits University rounded up their run in the round robin phase of the Varsity Basketball tournament, with a well-deserved 76-35 win over the Tshwane University of technology at a vibrant Old Mutual Sports Hall on Wits’ east campus. The win has now seen the Witsies beat everyone in the competition.
TUT prior to the game were basically fulfilling their fixture, after failing to secure enough wins that would see them progress to the semi-finals taking place tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon at the same venue. The men from Pretoria currently sit on the seventh spot, just above the Madibaz. Wits who managed a clean sweep, now sit comfortably at the summit of the log, just awaiting to hear who their opponents will be in the semi-finals.
The duel between Wits and TUT started off very well, with a good clean hard fought game of basketball with the hosts enjoying the early lead, which was short lived as TUT stormed back in to sneak past Wits 14-13 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw things settle down a little, with Wits taking better control of the game thanks to the teams composure and fighting spirit that saw them eventually overcome the 1 point deficit, racing to a 31-21 lead at the close of play in the second quarter.
The third quarter was a difficult one for TUT as Wits grew in confidence and also having the crowd behind them. The catch up game proved to be an uphill battle for Bafana baPitori and things got worse when the power play kicked in. Briarly Klaasen was like a man on fire during the power play for Wits, bagging two three’s and a two in the 2 minutes.
The fourth quarter was a complete riot from Wits, with TUT defending more than attacking. The crowd would cheered them on loudly as the game neared its conclusion. Miguel Ferrao also had a fantastic fourth quarter landing a three of his own in the dying moments. The buzzer eventually sounded shortly after that with Wits winning 76-35.
