The Varsity Basketball tournament served up another sizzling match-up, when the University of Johannesburg took aim at the University of Pretoria, in their quest to cement second spot on the log standings. It was a routine game of ball for the Joburg side, who oozed confidence right from the start to the end, dismantling Tuks 64-36 in the process to end their days visit to the Wits Old Mutual Sports Hall in style.
UJ went into the game, with their semi-final spot already secure after picking up valuable wins this weekend that made sure they would finish in second place just behind Wits, who were due to play next. Tuks were still in the hunt before the game of an opportunity to secure their spot, after fellow top-four contenders UKZN slipped up against UCT earlier on in the day. Unfortunately for the men from Pretoria, UJ wasn’t about to do them any favours.
The first two quarters were pretty much one way traffic, with it moving the direction of Johannesburg rather than Pretoria. UJ were in the mood, thoroughly running riot in Tuks territory, quickly advancing to a 26-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Things were coming together very well for UJ, even though Tuks’ Tshidiso Matebesi was running his socks off, an attempt to shut down UJ’s free scoring mood. That did not help much with UJ linking up well, to brush Tuks aside at the end of the quarter with the score at 40-12.
Tuks were showing signs of improvement as the game progressed but UJ’s powerful runs through the centre of the court were proving too much to handle. The game management by UJ was top notch, with a quick reply for every point they conceded. The third quarter did finish with UJ quite comfortably in the lead, with the score now sitting at 51-26. In the final quarter, Tuks were only able to add 10 more points to their tally, whilst UJ powered to a 64-36 victory.
