Varsity Basketball got off to a thrilling start this past weekend. Some of South Africa’s hottest university talent was on display as these ballers tore it up on Wits’ court. Here were the five standout players or MVPs (Most Valuable Players) based purely on statistics.
Brian Alam (UCT)
UCT’s no.10 is possibly the standout player after week one. Despite his team struggling to a sixth place spot on the log, he has shone like a brand new pair of sneakers. Making more blocks than any other player, scoring a massive 46 points, making the most steals as well as the most rebounds by some mile – Alam is the key to UCT’s team and any chances of them reaching the final four. He was also a catalyist in them beating title favourites VUT.

Points: 46
Steals: 17 (1st)
Rebounds: 63 (1st)
Siphumle Qanya (UCT)
Another key in the UCT cog is the athletic Siphumle Qanya. Not only has he scored the most points in the competition by 19 points and the most free throws, almost doubling the player in second spot, but he makes vital contributions apart from points. Second in turnovers, steals and one of the top in assists, Siphumle is the type of player you want on your team.

Steals: 16 (2nd)
Assists: 12 (4th)
Field goals: 28 (1st)

Richard Lubasi (VUT)
VUT’s Richard Lubasi is here for a simple reason – he’s the three-point king. When the lights are on and the music is pumping, every crowd loves a silky three-pointer. And Lubasi is as good as they come. He’s netted the most three-pointers and makes every second attempt – not bad at all.
Three-pointers made: 13 (1st)
Three-point shooting %: 50 (1st)
Thubelihle Sithole (UKZN)
Mr consistency is UKZN’s Thubelihle Sithole. He’s made the most two-pointers, in the top three attempts, made the second-most field goals, the second most free throws and his free throw success rate is 74%.
Two-points made: 25 (1st)
Attempted: 51 (3rd)
Field goals made: 27 (2nd)
Free throws made: 14 (2nd)
Free throw %: 74 (4th)
Migual Pedro Ferrao (Wits)
If we’re talking MVPs, Ferrao is rock solid. He may not be a silky three-point shot-maker, he might not shine brightest on the court, but he does very little wrong. Efficiency is calculated by adding every aspect of a player’s contributions to the team and factoring in their mistakes. Well Migual Pedro Ferrao always makes an immense contribution and very seldom makes an error. He is the only player to score above 80 in efficiency, with a very impressive 83.
Efficiency: 83 (1st)
Averaged points per game: 14
Averaging two-pointers per game: 6
