Despite their premature departure from this year’s Varsity Netball competition, take a look at three NWU players who made their presence felt on the court this year.
NWU are a very proud netball university, having won the competition in 2015 and 2016, and runners up in 2017, there is obviously no lack of talent or depth in this squad. With a lot of newcomers and a new coach, there was bound to be some changes going into the 2018 season. Here’s a look at three NWU players, none of whom are new to the Varsity Netball scene, who made their impact in this year’s competition.
Rome Dreyer
NWU’s centre and captain. Dreyer is quick on her feet and knows her way around the court, causing mischief for the opposition but also always being in the right place at the right time. She adds leadership, flair and pace to a talented NWU team. She also made her Proteas debut during the Varsity Netball tournament when she was selected for the Quad Series, and she was definitely missed.
Jessica du Plessis
One of the best players NWU has. Du Plessis stepped in as captain when Rome Dreyer left to compete for the Proteas, carrying her team through some tough losses but still showing impeccable leadership. She plays either Wing Attack or Goal Attack, and is one of NWU’s most accurate shooters. She’s making waves every time she plays, so it should be no surprise to see her make the Proteas squad at some point.
Sigi Burger
NWU’s sharp shooter. Burger, who also adds a lot of personality and humour to the team, plays Goal Shooter for NWU as well as the Proteas. She adds experience to the team, having competed at the Commonwealth Games. When on court for NWU, Burger showed her experience, nailing her shots alongside team mate Du Plessis. All of her hard work has earned her a second season in England, having resigned for Surrey Storm for the upcoming 2019 season.
