Romé Dreyer, NWU’s centre, captain and one of the standout players in the team talks about being the new captain, her Varsity Netball journey and her imminent Proteas debut.

Having made her Varsity Netball debut for NWU in 2016, Romé Dreyer is no stranger to the sport. Dreyer has also been in the Proteas squad since 2016, but she is finally get her chance to prove her worth this year now that she has officially made the team competing in September.

When asked how she feels about making her Proteas debut later this month, Dreyer says she is very grateful for the opportunity and feels blessed to be in the position she is in. “Even though I am playing against the world’s best, it won’t get the better of me and I plan on making the most of this opportunity.”

Dreyer has been chosen as the new captain for the 2018 season and says, “It’s a really great privilege to be captain for this bunch of amazing girls. They make it very easy because everyone steps up to their own responsibilities which makes me very proud. I’m also very proud to be part of this team!”

When asked what makes this year’s team special and unique Dreyer said, “I don’t want to compare because I feel that each year the team is very special. I think because Varsity Netball is our last tournament of the season, so we have developed friendships and formed bonds throughout the year. When it comes to being on the court or travelling on weekends it’s just a group of friends doing what we do best, for each other.”

Dreyer says that the favourite part of her Varsity Netball journey so far has been the bonds between the girls, the chats at practice, the bus trips, the “never a dull moment” moments, the teamwork on and off the court and, of course, the celebrations afterwards.

Dreyer has had a great start to her Varsity Netball campaign alongside her NWU team mates, who remain undefeated, so there is no doubt there will be more to say about her and her leadership in the weeks to come.
