In a high-scoring fourth round encounter between the North-West University and VUT in Bloemfontein, NWU were relentless throughout, but just missed the century mark scoring a total of 94 goals to 30.
NWU got off to great start, immediately putting pressure on the VUT centre passes, taking a few turnovers and converting. With speedy and accurate play, the team from the North-West gained a 10-goal lead only halfway through the first quarter. They extended their lead even further with an early power play in which they scored 10 points. This took the score to 35-6 after the first quarter.
The second half saw a few changes for NWU with Romé Dreyer being replaced by Nicole Amiras at centre, Sigi Burger being replaced by Claudia van den Berg at goal shooter and Monique Reyneke being replaced by Caitlinn Rousseau at goal defence. VUT also brought on their only reserve at goal shooter.
NWU slowed ever so slightly, but extended their lead by 9 goals before VUT scored. While van den Berg and Jessica du Plessis scored some excellent long range shots, Rousseau and Leonie Maree took some equally as impressive interceptions. With about two minutes left in the half, NWU reached the 50-goal mark with more than a 40-goal lead, leaving the half time score at 54-10.
The second half started with the North West team again making changes bringing on Kamogelo Moiloe and Nicolene van Heerden on at wing attack and goal defence respectively. Five minutes into the quarter the second power play was called, but this time it was VUT who came away with more goals scoring two double-pointers while NWU only scored 1. Although VUT played better in this quarter, NWU continued to extend their lead, leading 73 goals to 22 at the end of the third quarter.
For the last 15 minutes, Reyneke and Rousseau were back on at goal keeper and goal defence respectively, and NWU captain, Dreyer, was back on at centre to see her team to the end of the match. NWU did not let up with the whole team working hard as they aimed for a bonus-point win, but were just shy end the game at 94-30.
