What a week! There was drama on the last day of Varsity Football round robin stages. There were tears and celebrations across the country as debutants CUT made history by sealing their passage to the semi-finals to continue their fairytale run in the competition.

We are getting closer to knowing which team will lift the trophy this year. Here is what we learnt from the final round.

It’s official – there will be a new champion
UWC made history for all the wrong reasons. They are the first holders to bow out in the round robin stages. The Mother City-based university started their season slowly, but it was too little too late as they tried to save their disastrous campaign. Their 2-2 draw at home to TUT confirm their status as the worst defending champions to date. A new team will be crowned champions in this year’s competition.

TUT is the team to beat
TUT maintained their unbeaten run. The boys from Pretoria topped the table heading into the semis. Without a doubt Bushy Moloi’s charges are the team to beat in this year’s competition. The only team standing in the 2014 finalists’ way, of ending their Varsity Football drought, is themselves. They have hardly put a foot wrong and they are now two games away from making history.

Wits are party poopers
Wits have a big say as to which team will make the semi-finals. They may have had a disappointing campaign themselves, but they are not prepared to go down alone. They want to take a giant with them. Their 3-2 victory over Tuks has thrown the semi-final door wide open. Can they spoil the tournament and bow out with NWU-Mafiekng on Thursday? The answer to that question will be revealed on Thursday.

One giant will be eliminated
There is no room for both Tuks and NWU. One of them is set to bid farewell to this popular Varsity competition. Will it be Tuks or NWU? Only Wits can answer that question. Tuks need Wits to do them a big favour by beating NWU. The match is a dead rubber for Wits. NWU need just a point to progress to the next round, but playing for a draw is never simple.

Maybe this could be CUT’s year
CUT are having a dream year in this competition. NWU struck the crossbar in the very last minute in their goalless draw in Bloemfontein. Maybe the goal didn’t go in because it was divine intervention. Who knows, maybe fate is in their favour? This could well be their year.
