The University of Johannesburg netball squad have a tough task ahead, trying to register their first win when they take on their Maties counterparts in the third round of the 2017 Varsity Netball competition  on Monday night at the Coetzenburg Indoor Centre.

UJ are off to a slow start and are gunning for those invaluable points after losing two of their games in the opening round, leaving them in the danger zone at seventh place with 0 points. Meanwhile, the Stellenbosch side are looking to retain their position at the top after doing exceptionally well in their first two games, giving them a comfortable lead with ten points at the top of the leader board.

UJ coach Leigh-Ann Zackey-Smal reflects on her team’s previous performance against NWU-Puk and UFS-Kovsies.

“I’m going to be very honest, UJ was definitely not in Bloemfontein. We really struggled and I’m not sure if it was the fact that we had an injured player that plays a key role in the team or that we played against two of the best universities, which are Pukke and Kovsies all at once. So I am disappointed and I also do believe that the girls aren’t too happy with themselves, but we have already been on the court working at it, fixing our mistakes, and getting our heads right which I think is very important. We have been trying to stay motivated and positive after a weekend like that, which is quite difficult, but I do believe that they are all good and they fixed themselves and we are heading up and stepping up for our next match.”

The former Protea player said losing those games has interrupted their season plans of finishing in the top four.

“That is going to be the effect now, that we have to go and win each and every match and knowing my girls, I know that they can do it.”

Zackey-Smal shares her thoughts on their upcoming game against Maties.

“Well we going to go all-in. As I said earlier, we really want to take this win. We’ll take it quarter-for-quarter and step-by-step.”

UJ face the Maties Netball squad on Monday night, live on SuperSport 10 at 19h00.
