Early wake-up call could be beneficial for CUT

After going unbeaten for most of last season, it took penalty heartbreak at the hands of the University of Johannesburg (UJ) to stop the Central University of Technology (CUT) in their tracks.

While an unbeaten streak can lift any team’s mood and confidence, it also has the ability to hide any weaknesses the team may possess. Defensive instability, the wastage of chances, and tactical mishaps can all haunt any team that ignores such frailties.

A blistering start to the 2017 Varsity Football season that included a smash-and-grab against UJ and a clinical three-pointer against University of the Western Cape, gave CUT a dream start to their sophomore season. It, however, took a 2-0 reverse, away to Wits University in Johannesburg, to halt their charge.

Although they may have been deflated, CUT now have the opportunity to reflect on any of their weaknesses – either in tactical approach or in structure.

By the time table-toppers Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) land in the City of Roses, CUT would have ideally regrouped and sharpened their game plan. In TUT, the Bloemfonteiners will face a unit that is showing signs of possibly defending its crown. The title favourites have so far been clinical in front of goal and frugal at the back, with 10 goals scored and only one conceded.

Watch Wits stun CUT 2-0.

The return from injury of last season’s star man Orapeleng ‘Pajero’ Manopole, may prove vital to their cause as they bid to get back to winning ways. The CUT Stadium will play host in Thursday’s early kick-off (16:00) as the dark horses face what could be their greatest challenge to date.
