Her love for netball started at the age of five when her mom would go fetch her at pre-primary class to go train with the under sevens. Today she is one of the tallest netball stars in this year’s Varsity Netball tournament and represents the NWU-Pukke as goal shooter. Sigi Burger, and yes please pronounce her name correctly, as “Ziggy”, shared a childhood secret.

The talented player not only represents the North-West University but also South Africa on the court, and when asked about her career highlights it’s clear that she still has a bright future ahead of her.
“My highlight of my career has definitely been being part of the Protea team that played against Australia, New Zealand and England, as well as winning the World University Netball Championships with the South African University team, and winning Varsity Netball with the Pukke girls last year,” said Burger.

This 1,93m brunette is one of the tallest players in this year’s Varsity Netball tournament. She claims that although it can be to her advantage on the court, it can be a bit problematic off the court.
“Yes, being tall in real life sucks, because it’s always a struggle to find boys taller than me, but with the netball, it comes in handy. The other girls are also really tall so it just helps to get the ball a bit easier when jumping and it also acts as an intimidation factor,” said Burger.
She doesn’t only show off her moves on the netball court, but when asked about her hidden dancing talent Sigi laughed and shared her secret.

From seven years old she did ballroom and Latin dancing and even competed professionally.
“Yes, I used to compete professionally in all the competitions when I was younger. The dancing, however, took me to America where I competed in the World Champs and won my division when I was 10 years old,” said Burger laughingly.

“Growing up in a ‘platteland’ town, we did everything that was offered. Horse riding was one of my interests and I used to compete in shows and competitions all the time. My favourite was dressage and show jumping. My other interests were athletics and music, as I am able to play three musical instruments,” Burger explained.

Sigi Burger is a girl with many talents, on and off the court, but Pukke will be counting on her goal shooting ability up front as they go in search of the 2016 Varsity Netball title.
