A record-setting performance by the Pukke saw them thrash VUT 93-14 at the Coetzenburg Indoor Centre on Monday afternoon.
Pukke had scored nine goals before VUT could respond with their opener. The Vaal girls bagged a few goals but unfortunately for them Pukke steadily kept scoring and had a 19-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The girls from Potchefstroom were in an unforgiving mood after their loss to Tuks on Sunday and doubled their goal tally with VUT unable to muster any defence. At 40-5 the Pukke had their eyes firmly set on the ten goals they had to score to cement the bonus-point. The lanky Kifiloe Tsotetsi, who goes by Fifi among her teammates, started in goal and was deadly accurate in the circle. When Fifi was substituted by Sigrid Burger, who goes by Sigi, the Pukke onslaught kept on going.
The bonus-point was wrapped up in less than five minutes and the proverbial writing was on the wall. The rest of the quarter saw Pukke add another 17 goals with VUT being restricted to just three. The final quarter began with Pukke leading 69-7 and neither team had called a power play yet.
Pukke called theirs and scored four goals to lead 78-10 and were hunting their own record of most goals scored and biggest victory in Varsity Netball. The accelerator came down and Pukke scored 15 points in a matter of minutes and after the final power play the score stood at 93-14. This was the biggest margin of victory in the history of Varsity Netball and also bettered the Pukke’s own record of 88 goals which they scored against TUT back in 2013.
Both of the Pukke’s remaining matches are in the Cape, as they face UCT next week at the UCT Sports Centre before wrapping up their campaign against the Madibaz back at Coetzenburg. VUT will have to dig deep as they face Maties and Tuks in their final two matches.
