UniZulu claimed 7th place at Varsity Women’s Football 2019 by winning their first match of the tournament over a struggling CUT 1-0 at the Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds in Potchefstroom.

Both UniZulu and CUT ended the round-robin stages at the bottom of the log, so they were playing for pride in the blistering Potchefstroom sun.

The first twenty minutes was an even playing field for both sides who were back and forth in their own half with no real opportunities for either team. UniZulu found a sense of urgency before half-time, but were unable to capitalise on any opportunities to take the lead into the changerooms.

It was all UniZulu in the first ten minutes of the second half, with a Nokuphila Zobolo effort putting the Richards Bay-based side up 1-0 after several shots at goal.

CUT refused to step down and continued in search of an equaliser, with Kelebogile Mokhuoa coming close to goal on more than one occasion but was denied every time. Mokhuoa was the only spark in the CUT team, and unfortunately she was unable to pull it through for her team.

Although UniZulu were forced to defend the whole of the second half, they had done enough in the first half to claim the 1-0 win.
