UJ made sure to keep their Varsity Women’s Football semi-final hopes alive with a 3-0 win over UniZulu who’s own slim chance is now over.
Not even the heat could stop this action-packed match between the City of Gold footballers UJ and KwaZulu-Natal’s UniZulu women’s football team.
UJ scored the opening goal on 24 minutes, straight after the first water break, thanks to smooth link-up play between Karabo Makgurubetshi and the goal-scorer, Refilwe Maseko.
UniZulu showed that they traveled a long distance not to just let points slip away as they remained confident and persistent throughout a first half filled with fouls and missed goal opportunities.
After resting for a few minutes, the players began to swarm the green and white striped battleground.
Already with a goal secured, UJ kicked off the second half on a high note. It took UJ’s midfielder, Keolebogile Putu, five minutes to convert the second goal for the more dominant UJ team.
Both teams thereafter tried to tighten their defensive lines but the ladies in blue and white found themselves caught up in the line of fire, as a blood-thirsty UJ side advanced to their opponent’s half and added a third with Maseko nabbing her brace.
The UniZulu goalkeeper, Nomcebo Mkhabela, tried her very best and deservedly won herself an award from Debonairs Pizza but ultimately the win belonged to UJ, 3-0 who will go heasd to heasd with UKZN on Friday afternoon for a semi-final place.
