The Kovsies ‘Dream Team’, donning black armbands in solidarity with the movement against violence against women, and supported by their fathers, took the well deserved 64-20 win over TUT on home soil in Bloemfontein.
Both sides had a bit of a messy start with home side taking almost two minutes to score their first goal. However, in the following two minutes they raced to a six-goal lead.
Quick interplay between players such as Sikholiwe Mdletshe, Kovsies captain, Lefébre Rademan, Khanyisa Chawane and Rieze Straeuli, showed just how well these players know each other.
Although the opposition from Tshwane had opportunities to capitalise on errors and penalties by the Kovsies side, they trailed by nine at the end of the first quarter with the score standing at 15-6.
Kovsies started the second quarter with a single change, with Rolene Streutker replacing Straeuli at goal shooter.
Only three minutes into the quarter, the first Powerplay was called. Although much of the two minutes were spent under the TUT goalpost, Kovsies only scored two double pointers. With nine minutes left in the quarter, TUT made a couple of changes with Nkoloki Malebane coming on at centre, followed by Mpho Gololo coming on at wing attack.
The strong defensive effort by Kovsies goal defense Jana Scholtz, was instrumental in their second quarter effort that saw them extending their lead to 33-9 at the end of the first half.
Kovsies coach, Burta de Kock, started her teams’ second half with changes on the defensive side, with Ancia Pienaar coming on at goalkeeper and Chanel Vrey moving to goal defence.
Early third quarter defense from Vrey put more pressure on the TUT shooters forcing another held-ball call. This was followed by interceptions by Mdletshe and Bianca de Wee, and Rademan showing her talents yet again with her brilliant long range shots.
With four minutes left in the third quarter, TUT wing defence, Dinah Khetsi was replaced by Matamela Murivhami. Shortly after, Kovsies goal defense, Vrey, received the first caution of the match.
With seconds left in the quarter, the home side reached the 50 goal mark and ended the quarter 52 goals to 14.
The final quarter saw Proteas player, Meagan Roux taking on the goal attack position, replacing Rademan. Scholtz was back in the goal defence position with Vrey moving back to goalkeeper.
With 11 minutes left to play the second Powerplay was called and TUT was able to benfit, scoring a double pointer.
A second caution in the match was handed to the Kovsies wing defense, De Wee, but on a positive note, was followed by a skilful interception by Chawane.
After racking up a fair amount on penalties on the TUT side of the court, another classy interception by Mdletshe finished of the match, with the ‘Dream Team’ taking the win, 64-20.
