UJ showed no mercy against a less than impressive Maties side when they beat them by 38 runs at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom on Thursday afternoon.
UJ got off to a very strong start, with Maties’ Luke Holland conceding 19 runs in his first over as Delano Potgieter scored two sixes. However, the partnership between Potgieter and Joshua Richards was short-lived after Richards was dismissed in the fourth over, having scored an impressive 40 runs between them.
Both Jacob Miltz and Juan Landsberg scored 20 runs each, taking UJ to 138/6 at the end of the first innings.
Maties’ chase was off to a woeful start when captain Fritz de Beer was sent walking after an impressive catch by Chad Classen. Things only got worse for Maties when both Vezokuhle Mntungwa and Louis du Preez were sent packing by Classen in the second over, leaving the Western Cape side struggling at 12/3.
Maties reach the halfway mark in their run chase in the 13th over, but lost their seventh wicket in the process, looking down and out on 73/7. They called their power play in the 17th over but were unfortunate to lose a wicket rather than maximise on runs, scraping along at 97/9.
Maties were eventually bowled out in the final over, handing the Johannesburg side a 38-run win.
