Following what has been an unsuccessful return to Varsity Football, CUT hope to give their home faithful a memorable final outing when they host TUT in Round 7.
The Bloemfontein side showed signs of promise, particularly in their late win over UKZN in Round 2 and when they dispatched neighbours UFS in the memorable Round 4 derby. However, the momentum was quickly snuffed out and they fell victim to their inconsistency.
CUT skipper Keitumetse Mabathoana believes, “everything went the opposite direction when we lost two consecutive games [against UP-Tuks and NWU]”.
Despite that, Mabathoana prefers to focus on the positives of an otherwise turbulent season, which – with him having turned 25 – is his last in Varsity Football.

“We lost as a team [while] playing the football we’re comfortable with,” he tells varsityssportssa.com ahead of his final Varsity Football game after four year including a year with UJ in 2018.
Although their encounter against TUT is a dead rubber for them, CUT can still halt TUT’s charge for a fourth Varsity Football title as the defending champions are locked in a tense race to the semi-finals.
“We still have one game to go and we want to improve our log standing and exit the tournament with a win,” Mabathoana says.
On the other hand, TUT will be gunning for a win as a draw may not be sufficient given that there’s only a solitary point separating the log leaders and fifth place – with UJ also still in with an outside chance should results go their way.
The CUT Stadium in Bloemfontein will be the platform as CUT hope to bow out of the tournament gracefully and stop TUT in their tracks. The round 7 clash kicks off at 18:30.
