She had to wait five years, but just in time before she’ll be too old Happy Makofane gets a final opportunity to play Varsity Netball.

Makofane is the captain of TUT who made their comeback to Varsity Netball after having only appeared in the inaugural tournament in 2013.

She is the only survivor from that team. Makofane turns 25 on Christmas Day which rules her out from participating from next year.

According to the goal attack, she always believed they’ll make a return.

“I remember in 2016 we were playing in the B section of the USSA champs where we said we need to win it to put ourselves in a position to try and qualify for Varsity Netball, which we eventually did last year.

“It was a long wait and I was very excited to play again,” she tells varsitysportssa.com.

Makofane was a first-year at TUT in 2013, but took a break for a couple of years before returning to the books last year. She is doing a National Higher Certificate in Accountancy.

Makofane believes TUT is a bit stronger than in 2013. They lost their first match on Monday against UWC by only five goals.

“Back in 2013, we were only able to beat UCT. The standard is pretty much the same, just the umpiring has changed a bit.

“We just need to fix a couple of errors from Monday’s encounter then we will be fine. We did well in the Power Play and outscored UWC. We kept them goalless in their Power Play. Our aim is to win two matches and finish in the top six,” Makofane reveals.

Apart from Makofane, teammate Lentsamang Motau (NWU initially), Hlumisa Sithonga (Madibaz) and Jeanie Steyn (Madibaz, initially Tuks) are the other current players who featured in the first Varsity Netball tournament six years ago.

TUT next travel to Stellenbosch to play triple-header hosts Maties on Monday, 2 September. The game will be broadcast LIVE on SuperSport 210 while tickets are available on the Varsity Sports App and here: https://varsitysportsa.plankton.mobi/
