TUT have hit a bit of a speedbump as they try to defend their Varsity Football title, but one player still shining is Thuso Mlamla.

Mlamla, who’s playing his first year of Varsity Football, has established himself in the heart of the Red Machine’s midfield.

Easily the 19-year-old’s most significant impact so far was the cracking long-range goal he scored in the 2-1 win over NWU during the Round 3 double header at Tuks Stadium. The irony is that that he could well have been playing for The Noble Boys as he hails from Rustenburg and spent a period in the now-defunct Platinum Stars’ development set-up.

In an interview with varsitysportssa.com, the second-year Management Services student reveals how he has been integrated into the TUT environment.

How have the older players helped you to adapt in the team?

“They always encourage us to do better especially our captain Rorisang Rapelang.
Then we also have some players who have played this tournament more than once such as Thabiso Lebitso, Lebogang Phatlane and Tumelo Mphela. These players know the culture of the team and they really help us a lot to adapt.”

How do you deal with pressure considering that you are the defending champions and the team to beat in this year’s Varsity Football?

“Credit must be given to our technical team who always ensure that we are well prepared for our opponents.”

What’s it like working with an experienced coach like Bushy Moloi?

“It is a great experience because I learn a lot from him. He ensures that we grow as players in every session and I would like to thank him for everything he has done for me especially giving me a chance to showcase my God given talent.”

People are now seeing you playing on TV now, so how do you manage temptations as a young player?

“It does not distract me at all, however I try by all means to avoid social media and to strike a balance between my academics and football as it is not easy being a student athlete.”
