Varsity Football graduate Terrence Mashego had two reasons to celebrate this past weekend, firstly as part of his club team and then for his own efforts.
The 22-year-old leftback, who won the 2016 Varsity Football title with TUT, was in the starting line-up for TS Galaxy as they delivered one of the biggest shocks in recent local football history.
Mashego (who joined the first-year National First Division club from Mthatha Bucks) and his teammates showed no respect to big dogs Kaizer Chiefs by beating them 1-0 in the Nedbank Cup Final in Durban. In the process, ‘The Rockets’ became the first lower-tier club to win the tournament dubbed South Africa’s FA Cup – which Chiefs have claimed a record 13 times.
As it happens, Mashego – who studied for a National Diploma in Sports Exercise Technology, wasn’t the only former Varsity Football player in TS Galaxy’s line-up.
Tumelo Bodibe, who played in the inaugural Varsity Football tournament in 2013, manned the. The 26-year-old, who earned a National Diploma in Sports Science during his three years at North-West University, was key to keeping Chiefs’ dangerman Khama Billiat quiet.
That was on Saturday, but come Sunday evening Mashego was back in the spotlight when he won the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player gong at the annual PSL Awards. His ability in his primary role in defence and also as an attacking threat going forward, marked him out as one of the stars of the tournament. Having also showed his consistency, by turning out in 34 of TS Galaxy’s 36 matches this season, scouts of the bigger top-flight clubs will undoubtedly be circling around the Mamelodi-born future star ahead of next season.
