The sixth round of fixtures of the Varsity Basketball tournament concluded with big clash between the hosts Wits University and the Vaal University of technology at the Wits Old Mutual Sports Hall. The two tipped finalists of the competition went toe to toe in a stiff challenge that saw Wits coming out on top beating their Vaal opponents 78-67 to remain unbeaten and comfortably at the summit of the log.

Wits have been untouchable so far in the tournament, destroying everyone they have come up against. VUT have lost a bit of their flair in their more recent fixtures, losing their momentum at the wrong time in the competition as the knock out stages edge closer.

The game started off with both teams going at each other, testing one another in the physical battles with Wits often proving evasive, playing in their usual swift manner shifting the ball rapidly in all parts of the court. VUT were battling to keep up, giving the Witsies an early 23-8 lead. The match up lit up more in the second quarter, with the teams looking evenly matched right up until the dying moments of the quarter where Angelo Quinn was on hand to provide the assists that saw Wits safely in the lead at the break.

With the score at 40-29, VUT had some ground to make up in the last two quarters if they were to overcome the challenge from Wits. Everisto Passipamere however stepped once more for the home side, dunking on two occasions and also producing an amazing 3 point jump shot. VUT at the other end would quickly reply, seeing them eat into the Wits lead, with third quarter ending 62-57 to the hosts with a quarter to go. The final quarter was once again Wits’ who pulled away to eventually close off a 78-67 victory with one round to go in the round robbin phase of the tournament.
