The finals weekend of the Varsity Basketball tournament got underway on Friday afternoon at the Wits Old Mutual Sports Hall. The University of Cape Town got the weekends action rolling with a convincing win 82-44 win over one of the tournament strugglers so far, the Tshwane University of Technology.
UCT would have gone into the game, looking to build on their win over the tournaments favourites VUT, in last Sunday’s victory. On the other hand, their was TUT, who had only registered one win to their name against fellow strugglers, the Madibaz. The match up with UCT however did not going according to plan for the Tshwane side, who generally lagged behind for the whole game, with UCT looking like a side growing from strength to strength as the tournament progresses.
The game between the two, saw a generally slow start but it was the men from the Cape that owned the territory and possession statistics. This lead to them being able to brush off TUT and get the better start, with a 17-10 margin at the conclusion of the first quarter. The second quarter was an even more dominant performance from UCT, who now stamped their authority firmly in the game, with TUT conceding fouls at unfortunate times, whilst the defence also looked sluggish, with UCT penetrating their right hand side rather than coming through the centre. The teams eventually went into the break, with UCT enjoying a comfortable 38-18 advantage.
The third quarter was almost reminiscent of the first and second with UCT firmly in control. UCT captain Siphumle Qanya was once again in top form, bagging the three-pointers from the left hand side of the court, really putting his hand up for the ‘MVP’ award. TUT looked like they grew more and more tired and frustrated as the game went on, with UCT not holding back, to eventually come out 82-43 winners when the buzzer sounded in the arena.
