The second round of the Varsity Basketball tournament got underway with a clash between the USSA champions, the Vaal University of Technology and the Madibaz at the Wits Old Mutual Sports Hall, with VUT winning 111-43.
The game saw VUT follow up their victory in the first round against Tuks, with yet another victory over the Madibaz, claiming their scalp in a massive 111-43 win. This now leaves VUT with two wins on the trot, whilst the Madibaz have now gone two games in the tournament so far without a victory, after suffering yet another massive defeat in round one at the hands of the University of Johannesburg.
The Madibaz suffered an early setback on the scoreboard, with VUT piling on the pressure very early, coming out the first quarter leading the men from the Eastern Cape 23-4. Things however got a lot worse for the Madibaz in the second quarter, with VUT playing at a very high intensity, mostly accumulating their points off 2-point jump shots and rebounds. The physical battles were also won by the men from the Vaal, in the 50/50 battles, which saw VUT seeing themselves 52-19 up at the break.
The third quarter saw a much improved performance from the Madibaz but that did not help much as VUT also lifted their game, adding a further 28 points on the board. The fourth quarter was the period of play where both teams decided to uses their power plays but it was more effective for VUT, who in the end could not be caught on the scoreboard. Richard Lubasi had yet another spectacular game, claiming another MVP award at the end of the match up which ended with VUT winning 111-43.
