UWC were able to pull off a miraculous win against UJ to reach the 2018 final, when their game went to penalties on Saturday 22 September at the Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds.
UJ started the game very strong, with Phindile Matu scoring in the 11th minute of the game to up their confidence. Despite UJ dominating the whole of the first half, Khanyisa Manenegela scored for UWC just before half time to put the scores level going into half time.
UWC had the most opportunities in the second half, but nobody was able to finish. Both teams kept testing defence to avoid the match going to penalties, but after 35 minutes neither team was able to score, ending in penalties.
Both teams successfully scored four of their five penalties, which resulted in sudden death. Both teams got the sixth penalty, but Babalwa Mngxunya was the hero of the day when she got UWC’s penalty, sending her team into the finals which take place on Thursday 27 September.
