UJ captain Halala Nxumalo has reiterated that her team is only focused on doing their best as the 2018 season conclusion looms closer and closer.
The Auckland Park based side have faced their fair share of challenges as they have only managed to salvage two points thus far, while sitting uncomfortably in seventh place on the log. With only one game left, UJ remains strong and move forward with buckets full of enthusiasm and optimism.
Nxumalo said the injuries they suffered last year were unfortunate but they have come back stronger and more determined.
“Last year, a lot of things went south cause of injuries. Things we couldn’t foresee which was pretty much out of our control hence last season did not go as planned, but we came back with a big bang this year. People should not underestimate us, we urge them not to. We hopefully going to step it up as hard as we’ve been training, that’s the least that we can do so hopefully we can take it through to win it.”
Nxumalo said going into this season has brought out her leadership skills as she wants to groom the young squad to be the best that they can be.
“So the seniors of last year going into this year were a minority but with that said, our leadership skills has been put into test because we have to groom our girls who are straight from high school. Honestly, they have been pulling their weight, stepping up to the game, and competing against the big names. I am proud of them and they really should be proud of themselves.
“The nerves they have experienced have been a bit of a stress factor going into our games, but they have been ready and we are ready as a team despite the fact that they are young because they have gained some valuable experience as players.”
Nxumalo said she has been monitoring her injury progress and is happy to keep playing.
“We have been monitoring our injuries throughout the year as we know that they have been one of our main problems, so we made it our goal to remain fit and injury-free but obviously it always doesn’t go our way. I personally have been taking care of myself and hopefully I can finish this Varsity Netball season well without any injuries and that goes for the rest of the girls as injuries can really break a team down.”
