In a historic first, Varsity Sports launches Varsity Basketball, featuring eight of the best South African university teams in the country.

Lace up your sneakers and get ready to ball out because for the first time ever Varsity Sports brings Varsity Basketball to South Africa.

This exciting new addition to Varsity Sports will take place over two weekends; the first round will take place from 5-7 October and the second from 12-14 October, with the final on the last day of Round Two, with all fixtures taking place at the Wits University Sports Hall.

Eight of the best university basketball teams in the country will battle it out for the Varsity Basketball trophy. These include UKZN (University of KwaZulu-Natal), UJ (University of Johannesburg), UCT (University of Cape Town), Madibaz (Nelson Mandela University), TUT (Tshwane University of Technology), UP-Tuks (University of Pretoria), VUT (Vaal University of Technology) and hosts for the tournament Wits (Wits University).

Varsity Basketball will feature an innovative Power Play where for two minutes, every point scored will count for double, which will add extra excitement to the already exhilarating game.

Varsity Basketball code manager Cameron Peverett believes that the introduction of Varsity Basketball can begin a renaissance of the sport in South Africa.

“Varsity Sports has made a massive influence in developing the country’s top talent in various sports and we believe Varsity Basketball can have the same impact. The names of Varsity Athletics’ Caster Semenya, Varsity Cricket’s Lungi Ngidi and Varsity Women’s Football’s Refiloe Jane, fill the halls of the Varsity Sports’ pantheon and we believe Varsity Basketball can make a similar step in unearthing South Africa’s basketball talent.

“Basketball is a fast-paced, high-energy and entertaining sport which is fantastic from a spectator’s perspective. We have seen how the skill-levels and competitiveness of the competing universities have increased in all of our sporting codes and we look forward to making the same contribution to South African basketball.”

Peverett also extended his gratitude to the USC (University Sports Company) for their belief in the growth of the sport, as well as to Wits University for hosting all rounds of the tournament.

“A massive thank you must go to the USC and its CEO Flip Van Zyl, who saw the potential that this sporting code harbours. Their investment in the competition will see us start the tournament with a bang and create momentum for the future. And thanks to Wits University for giving Varsity Basketball a home to grow from.”

The Varsity Basketball launch will be held in conjunction with 5FM on 29 September and promises to be a uniquely South African hip-hop affair. The launch will feature all eight captains, an outside broadcast from 5FM, culminating into a celebration of the rich culture of the sport and bring the local Basketball community together.
