Monique Reyneke is another NWU player who made the Proteas squad for the Quad Series alongside her NWU teammate and captain Romé Dreyer and teammate Sigi Burger.
Monique Reyneke has been a prominent figure in the NWU netball team since 2015, and has shared some special experiences. She highlights a few, saying “Coming to the Puk and being coached by Dorette Badenhorst was the greatest privilege because I got better and stronger. My teammates are also the best. They support you, encourage you and back you no matter what, they’re happy with you and will even cry with you. The Puk gives you space to strive, dream and prosper – it’s a sense of family.”
When asked how she feels about her Proteas debut, Reyneke said, “I am truly so excited, it’s a dream come true. The nerves are definitely there for me but I believe that the butterflies will fly in formation when the time comes.”
Having already been with her teammates for a week, Reyneke says that being overseas is all about gaining experience and learning.
“Being a sponge and absorbing as much as possible. Being part of this amazing team is a privilege, step by step I’m getting where I want to be and getting better every time. I’m looking forward to seeing how I grow not only as a dreamer; not a only as a netball player, but a Protea netball player.”
Reyneke also said that meeting new people and having front row seats watching the best competing against the best is an added bonus.
With regards to any match day superstitions, Reyneke says that for Varsity Netball matches they listen to music through a speaker on the way to the courts, as well as in the locker room. They then roll and stretch on the court and play some hacky sack until warm up starts. She says she has no superstitions yet for her Proteas games, but always likes her seat on the bench to be neat with everything she needs quickly at her disposal, such as her towel or water.
Even though Reyneke was selected as a travelling reserve for the series, her Proteas debut is imminent, having already made her mark in this year’s Varsity Netball competition.
