Having played six games thus far, the University of Johannesburg has had their work cut out for them, fighting for a spot amongst their counterparts in the 2018 Varsity Netball season.
The Auckland Park side kicked off their year with a change in management, securing the services of coach Roelize Venter – Mors to lead the squad. This, in addition to a hopeful and young team, established a strong foundation with key players such Kim-Roche Holmes, Jodie Brown, and Halala Nxumalo returning to the court alongside the selected 2018 troops. Nxumalo has taken on the captaincy role, while Holmes fills the vice captaincy, bringing experience and wisdom to the game.
The Johannesburg side, though a well-organized team, has found themselves facing strong competitors throughout their campaign. Despite the defeats they have faced, the girls have remained optimistic and have chosen to focus on the small victories gained in order to keep their spirits high.
With a break in fixtures and the conclusion of the season looming by, UJ will need to use this opportunity to re-strategize as they attempt to cement their seventh place spot during our Heritage Day matches. Hosting VUT in the final meeting at home will not be an easy task as the Vaal based side will be throwing everything at UJ in order to gain points after spending the 2018 spell at the bottom of the table.
UJ could also use this home game occasion as a benefit to finally have the backing of their home crowd. This will bring a boost to their mental stamina, as well as, bring a refreshing energy to an already electric atmosphere.
