Where does this year’s success lie for the Madibaz in their Varsity Netball campaign? We speak to coach, Lana Krige and captain, Jeanie Steyn on how Madibaz have managed to turn around their season after a dismal run out in 2017.
Sitting comfortable in third on the log, in a knock-out position, Madibaz managed to beat, formally, the only two unbeaten teams left in the competition this past weekend, taking out NWU and Kovsies in two very tight and competitive games. Lana credits these wins to fixing the weakest link the team, encouraging the mindset that if you feel worthy off court, you will feel worthy on the court, thus bringing out the best in themselves and in their teammates.
A major contribution to winning these games is the fitness of the ladies. Managing to stay toe-to-toe with the best until the very end, which is when they’re able to stick it out till the end to win their games. This is largely thanks to the fact that they brought in Stephen Aylward to focus on their fitness, allowing time for Lana to focus on coaching her ladies. The results are there to see for yourself, with one game left against Maties in front of their home crowd on the 24th, although excited, the ladies know they still have work to do to secure the knock-out position.
Jeanie admits that even with five out of six wins, they know they need to carry on working hard to secure their spot. She says they know their game plan and it’s important to stick to it. And adds that the ladies have had a remarkable journey this year and are growing continuously as players and individuals.
For Madibaz to secure their knockout spot again after a two year wait, they will need to beat Maties or have NWU lose to Kovsies without scoring a bonus point, but they will of course be pushing hard for the win.
The game will be on the 24th of September at 18:00 in NMU Indoor Centre. Come support your varsity!
