Although she has only been selected for the Proteas recently, Romé Dreyer, captain and centre of NWU, has already established herself as one of the more popular players, especially amongst Varsity Netball players.
In a survey in which the players participating in this year’s Varsity Netball tournament had to indicate who their favourite South African player is, Dreyer received the most votes as a current Varsity Netball player. Teammate Monique Reyneke and Ine-Marí Venter of Tuks were the other current players to receive a vote out of the eight teams. Dreyer, Reyneke and Venter will leave for Australasia on Saturday for the Quad Series against England, Australia and New Zealand.
Dreyer, playing in her fifth Varsity Netball campaign, is certainly a popular figure amongst teammates and opponents. She was named Varsity Netball Player’s Player of the Series in both 2016 and 2017 after she received the most votes. In both years she was also one of three finalists for the Player of the Series.
The name of Karla Pretorius, who has established herself as arguably the best goal defence in the world, appears the most times (28) in the survey, followed by fellow Proteas Bongi Msomi, Erin Burger (both with 19), Maryka Holtzhausen (12) and Lenize Potgieter (9) with nine or more votes.
Five former Proteas also made the list. Adéle Niemand (Protea between 2006 and 2015) is the favorite of three players. She is the current assistant coach of the Maties. Niemand (Kovsies, 2013), Pretorius (Kovsies, 2013-2015), Holtzhausen (Kovsies, 2013) and Potgieter (UJ and Tuks, 2013-2015) all played Varsity Netball.
Interesting to note that is that one team all voted just for two players. Two teams voted for eight different players.
Listening to what Reyneke has to say about Dreyer, it’s clear why she is so admired.
“Romé is a strong girl, someone who cares a lot and actually has a soft heart. She will do anything it takes for her team and always gives her best, no matter what. A real inspiration and role model for all netball players,” Reyneke said.
