The sixth edition of Varsity Football will go down as one of the most exciting tournaments in this beautiful initiative’s history. We have seen high scoring games, biggest winning margins and entertaining draws. It has been a competition of surprises as UJ and Wits defied the odds by taking turns with NWU to lead the table. Goals were aplenty and we are not even in the knockout stages yet. As we go into the final round of matches before the knockout stages, here are Round Seven’s score predictions.

UWC 1-2 Tuks
UWC have nothing to play for in this match. They have been eliminated and they will play for pride against the defending champions. While UWC have nothing to lose and everything to gain in this game, the same cannot be said for Tuks. If Tuks drop the three points and NWU win their match against UJ, then Tuks will be sent packing in the tournament. The worst possible result that Tuks can get in this match is a draw. They are forced to look over their shoulders because of NWU and they cannot afford to rest. NWU have the opportunity to drag Tuks down with them in their last game of the tournament. Tuks will have to bring their A game in the Mother City to avoid any form of embarrassment.

NWU 2-1 UJ
NWU have no choice but to grab the bull by the horns. They have to go for it and hope that TUT or Tuks slip up in their respective matches. They didn’t do themselves any favours by losing three matches in a row though. NWU have left their qualification hopes in tatters. They have nobody to blame but themselves for their poor run of form. While UJ have already qualified and are guaranteed a home semi-final, they will want to preserve their unbeaten record. NWU have to win this game at all costs and hope that results elsewhere go their way – it’s as simple as that.

UKZN 2-0 Limpopo
This match is dubbed the ‘battle of the newcomers’. This match has the power to determine which team will settle for the wooden spoon. UKZN will draw some inspiration from their past two draws against UWC (3-3) and TUT (2-2), while Limpopo’s goals have dried out. UKZN have the potential to score goals, but Limpopo are emerging as the worst team in this tournament. Both teams have nothing to lose and everything to gain by winning and avoiding finishing bottom of the log table at the end of the tournament. UKZN look a good bet for the win but then again football is not played on paper. This match is big and both teams are looking forward to signing out of the competition with a win at the expense of the other.

Wits 1-1 TUT

This is without a doubt the pick of the Round Seven matches. Last year you would be forgiven to think that TUT will just pitch up at Wits and collect three easy points. But you will agree that Wits have improved and deserve their place in second place. Wits are no longer the whipping boys as they have put a lot of teams to the sword at their base. Their home games are exciting with an electric atmosphere these days. Wits are chasing that home semi-final, while TUT are looking over their shoulders and they need a result in this game. It’s going to be a cracker of a match.
