The University of Johannesburg netball squad face a tough challenge as they try to secure a possible five points against their Madibaz counterparts on Sunday night at the Coetzenburg Indoor Centre, Stellenbosch.
The Auckland Park side struggled in their opening matches when they lost 27-77 and 69-29 to NWU and UFS Kovsies respectively. With the loss, UJ are yet to register a point and are currently sitting in seventh place after two games. Meanwhile the Nelson Mandela University troops have kicked off their campaign on a high with two wins against UWC and VUT to place them in fourth place with 10 points. With a bid to maintain their top four position, the Eastern Cape based side will be giving it their all to gain another win.
UJ head coach Roelize Venter-Mors gives a brief description of the team’s performance last weekend.
“It was a great experience for me, especially from all the positive feedback that we received. Unfortunately we lost from high margins against NWU and Kovsies, but I was happy with girls in the first half of their game against Kovises as they managed to keep a 10 point difference, which was a great positive. So for now, we have analysed those previous games to note all of the negative areas and we’ve really worked hard this week to correct these errors. It was a learning experience this weekend, we are a very young team, and we can only build from here. ”
Venter-Mors shares her expectations for their upcoming fixtures this weekend.
“Firstly, we are going to focus on our game against the Madibaz on Sunday, I think we really we have a chance to beat them as long as we can keep our defensive lines and enforce our defensive patterns early in the game. I know that the Madibaz coach likes to play her Power Play early in the game so we have to keep them down as we can’t let them score more than two or three goals.
“If we have a positive outcome on Sunday, I think our run against Maties will be much easier because we’ll be in high spirits. So I think if we can focus on Madibaz, have a good game and then build on that, we can put enough pressure [on Maties] like we did against Kovsies.”
UJ will then face Maties on Monday evening in the fourth round of the 2018 Varsity Netball at 19h00, catch all the action live on SuperSport 10.
