Varsity Netball Match of the Weekend: Maties vs Tuks

On Sunday 2 September two old rivals will do battle when Tuks travel to Stellenbosch to take on the home team, the Maties. Here are seven interesting facts about this clash!

  • The last time the teams clashed, the Maties suffered their biggest loss (31 goals) in the competition and conceded their most goals ever (74).
  • The only triumph by Maties over Tuks in 2015’s semi-final was also their most famous win in the competition to date. They were the underdogs and won in Pretoria to reach their first and only final.
  • Tuks have recorded a bonus point all but once against the Maties for scoring 50 or more goals.
  • It will only be the third meeting between the teams in Stellenbosch. On the previous two occasions Maties came within four and three goals of winning the match.

  • Interesting fact: The two assistant coaches, Adéle Niemand (Maties) and Erin Burger (Tuks) played their 70th test together against England at the World Cup in 2015.
  • Ine-Marí Venter, Marlize de Bruin and Tshina Mdau (all Tuks) and Charmaine Baard (Maties) made up four of the ten places in the South African Fast5 team in 2016.
