Five games, one win, one draw and three losses – that’s what the University of the Western Cape’s record looks like for the 2018 Varsity Football season. In their last game against UKZN they had the game in their grasp and looked a side that would walk away with the maximum points, but they failed to bring the three points home.
With a top four finish looking a stretch, the boys from Bellville must go out and play for their pride. They have UJ next at home and the Mandla Zwane-coached side is currently sitting on top of the standings with 13 points and a win for the Orange army would all but guarantee them a home semi-final spot.
Josh Silent, who recently made a move to the United States to study and play football at Lenoir-Rhyne University in North Carolina, took some time to have a chat with us and also reflecting on his former side’s performance this season.
“I think anything is possible in football and with the players they have that I’ve played with I know they have what it takes to win their last two games. Whether Tuks and NWU slip up is in the hands of the football gods. I think their struggles this season have been a mixture of injuries to a key players like Giovani Gafoor and also a big group of new players that needed to adapt to the style the team plays and also the pace of the tournament,” said Silent.
With two rounds to play, UWC will be hoping that the game between Tuks and NWU ends in a result that will favour them but they also need to show up against the log leaders and get maximum points at home.
The former Varsity Football winner said: “Its eight weeks of really intense football and there’s very little room for error if you want to make it to the semi-finals. So I think integration of new players is difficult but that just means the team is building for the future which is a positive.”
Here’s what happened in their last game
A win for the Bushies will see them have seven points going into the last round of games and a favourable result from the clash between NWU and Tuks, who are in position four and five, will ensure that the games in the last round will be mouth-watering.
“I’ve been following the games and I’m happy they are sorting out the goal scoring problems they had in the first three games. I’m crossing my fingers all the way here in the US for the boys,” concluded Silent who is currently studying towards his Master’s degree in Business Administration and also playing college football.
The game kicks off at 18:30 at the University of the Western Cape Stadium.
