UWC captain Keesha van Schalkwyk sat down to write from her team’s hotel in PE ahead of their clash with Cape neighbours Maties.
Last night we were left to ponder the missed opportunities and lack of composure against the girls from the Windy City. We were very disappointed about the loss considering our recent win against the Madibaz at the USSA tournament and particularly due to the fact that this was one of the matches that we targeted to improve on our overall standing of last year.
Nevertheless, we need to move on and put this behind us as we are having no delusions about our upcoming string of fixtures where we are playing all the semi-finalists of last year’s tournament in consecutive weeks. We realise that there is no time to sulk over spilled milk. The girls and I are nevertheless upbeat and are looking forward to nailing our colours to the mast and giving all that we can.
We realise how unfortunate it was for us to have lost one of our new acquisitions Danelle Lochner who played exceptionally well during the season and especially at the USSA tournament. Danelle is not eligible to play varsity netball this year due to a technicality and this was a big setback for us to say the least and amplified by being informed two weeks before the tournament. We however respect the rules of the competition and have a good squad with a lot of new young players that we are sure will stand the team in good stead when called upon.
We had good session with the physio last night and this morning we are doing our final preparation for the Maties game this afternoon. We all know the magnitude of the challenge that lies ahead and are looking forward to leaving all out on the court and importantly enjoy ourselves and soak up the experience.
