Varsity Football action continued on Thursday evening, with Wits back home after a tough week away at cross town rivals UJ. This time around however, on a warmer Johannesburg winters evening, the hosts welcomed UP-Tuks from Pretoria in what ended a 0-0 stalemate.
The Juskei Derby usually promises a jam-packed affair with entertainment and goals, this time around did not live up to its hype as both teams went tooth-and-nail at each other but nothing could come of it, as both the Witsies and UP-Tuks had to settle for a 0-0 stalemate.
In the match-up itself, the first half began with both teams going at it from the onset, producing an entertaining opening few moments that looked as if the game promised goals. The game was of a high intensity, with the possession exchanging hands, but attackers on both sides were failing to find clear chances on goal.
Tuks players seemed to be growing more and more frustrated as the game went on, with the first booking of the match even going against them. Both Wits and Tuks then had to settle for the scoreline remaining 0-0 going into the break.
The second half was also fairly entertaining, but this time, it seemed the coaches at the break had instructed the defenders to be more compact at the back. Less opportunities were created and the keepers weren’t troubled as much in the the first 20 minutes. As the game progressed, however, the players from both sides seemed to get heavier legs and defensively things started to open up a little.
The hosts were the ones that enjoyed the better opportunities for the rest of the game, with their fans spurring them on. Tuks picked up a further two yellow cards, with Wits keeping more discipline in the cautions department. In the end it counted for nothing, as the final whistle sounded with the teams settling for a 0-0 draw.
