Justine Palframan has for some years now been dominating the 200m and 400m sprints at the Varsity Athletics series and she shows no sign of stopping this domination after a convincing 23.43sec win at the first of the two Varsity Athletics meets at Tuks on 2 March.

That win came the day after her 52.19sec run at the first Athletix Grand Prix Meet in Ruimsig on 1 March. A week later the 24-year-old Matie student again emerged triumphant at the second Grand Prix Meet at Tuks in the 200m with a 23.32sec time, her season’s best so far.

On the weekend of the 15-17 March, she will line up in the 400m at the National Championships in the hopes of reclaiming the title she last won in 2015. In fact, in that year she won both the 200m and 400m, with the latter being her preferred event. From the National Championships it is off to Paarl for the final Grand Prix Meet on 22 March, before heading north again for the Varsity Athletics final, again at Tuks on 23 March.

“It is a heavy schedule and lots of racing, but I have faith in my coach, Susanne Ferreira to manage my preparation and that I am fresh for every race.”

Palframan lost long time coach, Mohamed Ali when he moved to KZN. After being in limbo for a while and having heavy study duties which saw her performances dip, Palframan is now happy to be with Ferreira, evident in her return to form. That 400m she opened her season with is her 5th best time ever.

“I know it is a busy domestic season, but I am feeling good and stronger than I have in a long time, so I am confident that 2018 can be a really good year for me.”

Palframan’s 2015 has to go down as her best season to date, with the double national titles of the 200m and 400m and a win at the World University Games in 2015. In 2017 she returned to the World University Games and won silver in the 400m.

Having not been selected for the Commonwealth Games in April, Palframan can, once the domestic season is over, set her sights on making the Africa Championships team which will be heading to Asaba in Nigeria from 1-5 August, and with a good break after the domestic season, she could well be close to her best again for those African Championships.

That though is all in the future, for now though, Justine has her sights set on winning at the final Varsity Athletics Meet on 23 March as the culmination of a long domestic season.
