On 3 March 2018, athletes took to the track and field as South Africa’s top universities battle for top honours in Varsity Athletics. Though it is a team competition, a number of individuals stood out as they near South African records in their respective disciplines.
Ischke Senekal – Women’s Discus
In the women’s discus throw there really is no competition when it comes to first place. Dominating the event is South Africa is Ischke Senekal, who broke a Varsity Athletics record with her 56.69m. She was just 17cm off her PB and 8.18m off the South African record, set by Elizna Naude in 2007! While it is a fair distance to the record, one big push in the right conditions could just see her edge even closer.
Johan Grobler – Men’s Javelin
Grobler’s 80.25m earned him the new Varsity Athletics record. He’s 8.5m away from that SA record set by Marius Corbett and just 24cm off his personal best.
Zinzi Chabangu – Women’s Triple Jump
Chabangu has been SA’s star in the Triple Jump. Her 13.47 Varsity Athletics record was inches away from the South African record of 13.90, set by Patience Ntshingila. She could very well break this on the 23rd of March at the second Varsity Athletics meeting.
Taylon Bieldt – Women’s 100m Hurdles
Dipping beneath the 14-sec mark, Bieldt’s 13.73 is very close to the SA record of 12.94, which Corien Botha has held since 1998. At just 19-years of age, it might not be too long before she dips below 13.
Justine Palframan – Women’s 200m
Palframan’s PB is 78 split seconds away from the long-standing South African record set by Evette de Klerk back in 1989 (22.06). As she eases into the season, she is already running times such as this one. Keep an eye on her in the second leg of Varsity Athletics on 23 March at Tuks Stadium!
