Two new teams will join Varsity Beach Volleyball with the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) both qualifying.

Varsity Beach Volleyball, which takes place at Kings Park from December 1st to December 3rd, will have a new look this season as the University of Johannesburg (UJ) and Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) join the tournament.

The Gauteng-based sides replace University of Cape Town and University of the Free State in the competition after the USSA tournament decided competitors earlier this year.

Six teams will fight it out in the Varsity Beach Volleyball with Vaal University of Technology (VUT), University of the Western Cape (UWC), University of Limpopo (UL) and University of Pretoria (UP-Tuks) and of course, UJ and TUT.

Last year, UWC reclaimed the title after just pipping Tuks in the final 33-29. After a hotly contested first half, UWC managed to go into the break ahead by just three points as the score rested at 18-15. The second half was much the same, with UWC showing enough skill to keep the lead all the way through to keep the coveted trophy.

University of Johannesburg Sport Manager, Anton Van Rooyen, is excited his team is back in the competition after a lengthy spell of not qualifying and that they can finally display their passion for the game once again.

“The UJ Varsity Beach Volleyball team, did well in 2012/2013, playing in the finals in both years. With new players coming after that, we lost out on qualifying in 2014. In 2015/2016, the USSA qualifiers did not take place and again we did not play.

“Fortunately in 2017 we managed to qualify by finishing second on the overall standings after the USSA Beach competition. We are very excited to be back in Varsity Beach Volleyball, and chasing the win that evaded us for 2 years in the beginning. We are looking forward to the competition in December and our preparation is on track to make an impact.”

UJ will kick off this year’s Varsity Beach Volleyball’s when they take on VUT at 09:00am on December 1st. Matches will be broadcast live on SuperSport.
