Monday evening saw Wits host Tuks in their second game of the Varsity Football tournament. The game saw the home side pick up their first win of this season’s campaign, beating Tuks 3-2.

The match got off to a great start for the hosts, when they were awarded a free kick in a great position, which Mahle Mtabane whipped in and it was met my Greame Dor’s head to see Wits take the early lead.

The next few moments saw the visitors bombard the Wits goalkeeper with fierce shots but the man between the sticks stood firm. The breakthrough did eventually come, when Wits defender Snethemba Msane pushed the ball into his own net, in an attempt to clear it. With the score now level, Tuks kept the momentum going and eventually found a second thanks to a corner nodded in by Mbongeni Masilela. Tuks then looked like they would get a third but the Wits defence held on to just keep the deficit at one goal. As the interval approached, Wits shifted into a different gear and earned themselves another free kick, which Tuks keeper Dylan Paterson failed to hold onto and Dor toe-poked in to level matters at the break.

The second half saw it start off with Tuks looking like they would come away with the three points. Midway through the half however it was Wits who saw themselves go ahead with a great finish from Graeme Dor, who connected the ball well from close range. The game then saw Wits hold out against a few threatening Tuks attacks. The Wits goal was then the last bit of goal action that saw Wits clinch their first win of the tournament, ahead of their clash with NWU Mafikeng at the Bidvest stadium on Thursday.
