With only a fortnight until the commencement of the 2017 Varsity Women’s Football tournament, the Central University of Technology have their eyes set on a semi-final spot.

Now in their second year of Varsity Football, CUT will need to negotiate packed academic programmes to put in a commendable show at the tournament to be held in Potchefstroom, North-West province.

“We have to deal with classes, tests, and assignments…it’s difficult to get the girls on the field,” said coach Pumla Mona.

Mona, who has been marshalling the Bloemfontein outfit for just over a year, noted one aspect that could help their performances.

“We need to correct mistakes from the USSA [University Sports South Africa] tournament, such as not scoring enough goals.”

In response to that predicament, Mona has had to convert some of the players into makeshift strikers. “We do not have enough time, but we need strikers since one of our strikers has since graduated.”

CUT will open their account with a Bloemfontein derby against the University of the Free State, before taking on the University of Cape Town and the Tshwane University of Technology. “If we win our first two matches, we will get to the semi-finals.”

All Varsity Women’s Football matches will take place at the Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds in Potchefstroom from 21 September 2017. Select matches will be broadcast live on SuperSport 10.
