After what some may call a nightmare event, the men form Alice suffered a demoralising defeat in Pretoria. The loss to the University of Pretoria was a game changer for the men from University of Fort Hare, as the result means that UFH will miss out on the possibility of making the semi-finals, despite having one game in hand.
“We knew it was never going to be an easy competition, we thought we had prepared enough, but I guess the competition got the best of us,” said head coach Charles Hanyani. “To all our fans, we have one last game and then we wrap things up, so I guess we have one last game to give the fans one last show stopper.”
The men from University of Fort Hare will face University of Johannesburg in Alice in their last game of Varsity Football They will be looking to secure one last win to close off their campaign.
“This is not how we wanted to exit the tournament. We wanted to showcase and represent our university, but I guess we fell short of that. One last kick and we are done,” said a rather downbeat captain, Siphamandla Zanekile. UFH will take the field without their tall striker Olwethu Bless, who suffered a hamstring injury in Pretoria. The reserve goalkeeper Phakamani Mangona will take centre stage, replacing Emmanuel Mashabela.
