Round Five is out of the way and there were some interesting results and the biggest was TUT defeating UWC 4-2 in Tshwane as Themba Ndlovu stole the show with a hat-trick. Also registering his name on the score sheet for UWC was Chad Smith and Varsity Sports caught up with the speedy winger form Lotus River.
The 21-year-old, who is currently completing his Honours in Sports Recreation and Exercise Science, has been one of the strikers hitting the back of the net for UWC this season. He has scored 4 goals this season and hopefully he’ll add to that tally before the season ends.
“It’s has been a crazy season so far but I am enjoying it, we have won some games and lost some but we learn at the end,” said Smith.
Smith forms part of the attacking trio which consists of Thulani Mkosi and Phiwokuhle Mpalala. The trio has been tormenting defenders this season and UFH, Wits and NWU can attest to that.
“People are calling us bad travellers and that not the case. There factors like altitude that some of us are not used to, but that’s not an excuse. CUT and TUT are good teams. The ball is in our side of the court now and the only way to deal with that is to work hard and win the remaining games,” Smith added.
Watch TUT defeat UWC 4-2:
With five rounds played UWC have accumulated nine points and currently occupy second spot. With two rounds remaining the boys from Bellville are still on course to getting that home semi-final spot.
“I attribute my performance this season to the hard work I have been putting in at training and on match day. Also my teammates have been instrumental and I hope that I will score more goals for the team,” concluded Smith
Next up for Smith and his teammates is a trip to UP-Tuks in Tshwane on the 11th of September with kickoff at 16:00.
