Following last week’s disappointing performance as hosts of the fifth round of the Varsity Football tournament against Central University of Technology (CUT), North-West University is expecting  to cause an upset in their next one of two matches remaining in a bid to increase their chances of qualifying for the semi-finals and ultimately, lifting the championship trophy.

In their encounter this Thursday at the University of Johannesburg’s AW Muller Sports Complex, North-West University (NWU) has a bone to pick with University of Johannesburg having lost 6-2 in last year’s tournament. In order to qualify for the semi-finals, NWU will have to disrupt UJ’s plans to pull a fourth win a row and send a strong message to Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) that they are still a team to be reckoned with.

Coach Amos Xabanisa believes in focusing the team’s strengths on achieving measurable outputs. In keeping with this philosophy, the NWU boys hit the ground running in preparation of this encounter including leaving a day early with the aim of acclimatising the players to the pitch and weather conditions ahead of their encounter.

“This is football and preparation is key in order to deliver the kind of results our die-hard fans want to see us producing. We are going into tomorrow’s game with a resolve to give it our all and play the beautiful game,” said NWU team manager, Vuyolwethu Sambo.
