After recovering from back-to-back losses with a hard-fought victory in Mafikeng, the Central University of Technology (CUT) will hope to increase their semi-final hopes as they host a winless University of Fort Hare (UFH) in Bloemfontein on Thursday.
The visitors will arrive in the City of Roses looking to register their first point, or three, to salvage some dignity from an otherwise disastrous campaign. UFH, after all, have shipped in 17 goals without scoring any and a confident CUT may look to exploit this.
“The win [1-2 over North-West University] came at a vital point when we needed it,” CUT skipper Morena Lehloa said when asked about the importance of that victory. “It boosted our confidence and instilled hope and belief in us.”
Lehloa, however, chose to focus more on his team’s bid for a semi-final spot.
“Qualification is wide open for everyone but a home semi-final is crucial for us.”
Last season’s semi-finalists are level with the University of the Western Cape and the University of Johannesburg, two teams they managed to overcome in the opening rounds of the 2017 Varsity Football season.
While UFH may appear to be walkovers, CUT will be wary not to underestimate them. It was, after all, a wounded Wits University that put the brakes on CUT’s initial winning run.
Kick-off at the CUT Stadium is scheduled for 18:30.
