TUT outclassed UWC largely thanks to Themba Ndlovu magic, as the defending champions beat UWC 4-2 in Tshwane on Monday night.

In line with cancer month, the two teams were escorted by children wearing pink caps and pink ribbons to show the university’s goal of empathising with the people who are affected by cancer and raising awareness for the disease.

The home team showed dominance in the opening stages as they played possession football in the UWC half. The log-leaders were rewarded with an early goal in the 11th minute, thanks to captain, Themba Ndlovu, after consistent pressure on the UWC side. It was an exchange of blows as it only took 4 minutes for UWC to hit back as TUT conceded a soft goal from a Josh Silent shot inside the penalty area.

The visitors were silenced again through the tight-angle goal of Lebogang Phatlane in the 18th minute. It seemed to be TUT goalkeeper Sikhumbuzo Ncube’s worst day as he conceded another goal, just 4 minutes later, from a long-range shot by Chad Smith.

TUT had a chance to go a goal up again in the 33rd minute after being awarded a penalty, but it was pulled wide by Ndlovu. The scores were level at half-time as both teams headed into the break with two goals apiece.

Both teams seemed energised in the second half. It was a display of tactical awaerness and precision as both teams looked stronger on defence. It took 20 minutes for the TUT skipper to get back onto the scoresheet after curling in a left-footed free-kick from outside the box to put TUT back in the lead.

It became a showcase of individual brilliance as Themba Ndlovu completed his hat-trick, driving in a powerful shot that left the UWC keeper Ryan Ramandh wanting, as he made it 4-2 for the home side.

UWC put in a lot of effort in the final minutes of the game, but it was to no avail as all their shots failed to hit the back of the net. The Tshwane side went on to another victory as the game ended 4-2 to TUT.
